Elementary

The kindergarten classroom is a literature-rich environment in which each student is learning to interact with the written word. Through a centers-based structure, students will read on their own, write fiction and non-fiction stories and learn basic phonics through the Easy-For-Me reading program by Child First. The Singapore math curriculum is used as a basic structure as students use hands-on materials to explore math concepts. In science the students discover and explore the following topics: five senses, living/non living things, dinosaurs, magnets, force and motion, bubbles, dental hygiene and insects.. In social studies, students learn about their families and classmates while beginning to distinguish the past from the present using a literature rich approach to social studies. Our kindergarten classroom is a lively room of colors, sounds, guided learning, and creative projects.

At the first grade level, students enjoy a literature rich atmosphere of reading aloud, author studies, and library privileges. We use the McGraw Hill Reading Wonders curriculum for Language Arts. We explore fiction and non fiction texts, the related vocabulary and reading, writing and research skills in a holistic, integrated format through this curriculum. Students continue to explore manipulatives as they use the Singapore math curriculum. In science the students discover and explore the following topics: elephants and other animals, solids/liquids/air, weather, and a health unit on growing and hygiene. In social studies, students begin to understand their rights and responsibilities as citizens as they interact with home and school environments. They examine changes over time in these communities and explore the way people live and work together. We also believe in integrating technology throughout the curriculum in an effort to help students build 21st century skills.

At the second grade level, students are challenged in their language arts studies as their vocabulary grows through reading and writing on the topics they are studying in their science and social studies classes. We use the McGraw Hill Reading Wonders curriculum for Language Arts. We explore fiction and non fiction texts, the related vocabulary and reading, writing and research skills in an integrated format through this curriculum. It brings a holistic, integrated approach to our language arts curriculum. Students will learn to engage responsibly with technology as they use Chromebooks. In social studies, second graders study changes in our school and local community over time and have a focus on map and globe skills. In science the students discover and explore the following topics: plants, engineering and simple machines, soil/rocks, health and nutrition. We use the Singapore math curriculum as we continue to learn number sense, measurement, and other math skills.

At the third grade level, students continue to be challenged in language arts class through grammar and spelling studies, reading excellent works of literature and writing in a variety of genres. We use the McGraw Hill Reading Wonders curriculum for Language Arts. We explore fiction and non fiction texts, the related vocabulary and reading, writing and research skills in an integrated format through this curriculum. It brings a holistic, integrated approach to our language arts curriculum and students continue to develop technology skills through the use of Chromebooks. Students begin literary analysis as well as develop basic research skills. In social studies, third graders study the cultures and histories of the Asian continent with a focus on Thailand. In science the students discover and explore things in the sky; air, flight, birds, bats and space. We use the Singapore math curriculum to continue to grow in multiplication and division and other math skills.

At the fourth grade level students continue to be challenged in language arts class through grammar and spelling studies, reading excellent works of literature and writing in a variety of genres. We use the McGraw Hill Reading Wonders curriculum for Language Arts. We explore fiction and non fiction texts, the related vocabulary and reading, writing and research skills in an integrated format through this curriculum. This is a rich resource for our teachers and students and includes learning to do some of their work on Chromebooks and Google classroom. It brings a holistic, integrated approach to our language arts curriculum. Students begin literary analysis as well as develop basic research skills. In social studies, students study the cultures and histories of North and South America and Australia. In science, 4th graders learn about energy, including studying magnetism, electricity, light, sound, solar power and the movement of the earth. We use Singapore math curriculum to continue to grow in math skills especially focusing on real-world word problems. We also believe in integrating technology throughout the curriculum in an effort to help students build 21st century skills.

At the fifth grade level, students continue to be challenged in language arts class through grammar and spelling studies, reading excellent works of literature and writing in a variety of genres. We use the McGraw Hill Reading Wonders curriculum for Language Arts. We explore fiction and non fiction texts, the related vocabulary and reading, writing and research skills in an integrated format through this curriculum. This is a rich resource for our teachers and students and includes learning to do some of their work on Chromebooks and Google classroom. It brings a holistic, integrated approach to our language arts curriculum. Students begin literary analysis as well as develop basic research skills. In social studies, students study the cultures and histories of Europe and Africa. In science the students discover and explore the following topics: weather, oceanography, oceanographic engineering, and anatomy and physiology. We use the Singapore math curriculum to continue to grow in math skills especially focusing on real-world word problems. We also believe in integrating technology throughout the curriculum in an effort to help students build 21st century skills.

At the sixth grade level, students continue to be challenged in language arts class, reading excellent works of literature and writing in a variety of genres. Literary analysis deepens as well as growth in writing composition. In social studies, students study chronological history from the beginning of time through the Renaissance period including a weekly look into current events. In science, students discover and explore the following topics: plants, classification, chemistry, energy, earth & space, and animals. For math, we use the Glencoe/McGraw Hill (USA) curriculum: Math Connects course 1. Sixth grade students deepen their understanding of using technology effectively and responsibly. We want to encourage our sixth grade students to become leaders and give them a variety of opportunities in leadership. We also have a mandatory outdoor education campout where students grow in interpersonal, leadership, and outdoor skills. This year is also used as a transition year developing study skills and character traits necessary as students complete their elementary years and move into being successful middle school students.

All of the elementary students participate weekly in our physical education program, art classes, library class, Thai language lessons, music, as well as a class that includes creative ways to learn about Thai culture. Students grow in computer literacy each year through exposure to technology in the classrooms as well as focused computer science classes; students begin formal keyboard typing lessons in second grade.
Equally important, all elementary students participate in a weekly all-school chapel time of worship and learning more Biblical truths as various people from our community come and share with the students. Additionally, elementary students participate in a monthly assembly, including an opportunity to share what they’re learning, to worship, and to learn how to become leaders.
Throughout the year, CRICS elementary students are also able to participate in field trips throughout northern Thailand, community outreaches, poetry recitations, special all school events and programs. Students also have opportunities to participate in organized sports such as soccer, gymnastics and basketball.
